My name is Jan Svenungson and i live in the small town of Stenungsund on Sweden’s west coast.
This website reflects two of my main interests; photography and urban exploration.
When i was a kid i stole my fathers camera and brought it to punk rock shows to take photos. Me and a friend spent countless numbers of hours in the darkroom, developing the films, copying the pictures, listening to music and talking about all those great bands we had seen. After a couple of years the scene wasn’t what it used to be, or maybe it was me who wasn’t, i can’t really tell. Regardless, i stopped going to shows and the camera was put away in a box and i haven’t used it since then. In 2008 i bought a new camera though, and now i am back in the game even though my photography now and then are very different. Now i use a digital camera and the objects i photograph nowadays are usually places i happen to run into when i engage in my other hobby, urban exploration.
Urban exploration is a broad definition that i won’t dissect here. For me personally, the focus is mainly to explore abandoned facilities or active areas that most people will never see. It might be a factory that has been shut down for decades or just as well a radio-mast in the middle of nowhere, mostly anything goes for me. The only things i am picky about is to never, ever, break and enter to get access and to live by the codex “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.”
I usually reason that less is more. I try to not tamper to much with the pictures, what goes into the camera is essentially what comes out as a .jpeg when i am done with the post-processing. I do edit the contrast and brightness and i do crop the pictures but i usually do not use a lot of filters or effects. Exceptions do exist, but they are exceptions.
All the pictures are released under a Creative Commons license. That means that anyone are free to edit and copy my pictures as they see fit as long as they give me credit, do not redistribute my work under a different license or use it commercially. The complete license is available at Creative Commons website.
I am quite aware that the size of the images are much to small to be used in some ways. The reason for this is to keep this website relatively fast. If You, for whatever reason, want to get a certain picture in a higher resolution you can contact me and i will send it to you.
This website is run on GNU/Linux. I use Wordpress and a heavily hacked version of the Hemingway-theme to handle the posts. The NextGEN Gallery-plugin and the Lightbox 2-plugin is used to display the pictures while the Clean Archives Reloaded-plugin is used to create a dynamic list of the galleries. Other softwares that make this site possible is, but is not limited to, Apache, PHP and MySQL.
I would love to hear from you if you have opinions about my pictures, if you have found some weird bug or to discuss photography or urban exploration.
